Why the Internet Archive’s the place to game

What platform are you currently gaming on? PS4? Xbox? Windows? Mac? How many people would say DOS?

I expect there’s a few of you out there that don’t remember the days of DOS (Disk Operating System) on your PC’s; typing in commands seems so long ago now we have touch screens and voice activation. But DOS systems had lots of great games and many of them are fondly remembered. And thanks to the Internet Archive you can now play nearly 2,400 of them in your browser – for free!

Let’s be honest, why wouldn’t you want to try out some of these classics and re-live some childhood memories, or for the younger readers why not laugh at the games your parents or older siblings used to play.

Yes, you can play the original FIFA in your browser!

As well as original gaming classics like Tetris, PacMan and Donkey Kong you can find the games that spawned a million sequels like FIFA International Soccer, SimCity and Street Fighter II.

When I looked through the list I saw such greats as Sensible Soccer, Lemmings, Maniac Mansion and even Leisure Suit Larry.

On top of the DOS games there’s the Console Living Room, a selection of classic console games. Just looking through the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) section you can play such gems as The Lion King, Road Rash, Micro Machines and Mortal Kombat.

Plus there’s the Internet Arcade which houses over 600 classic arcade games from the 70’s to the 90’s; including Tron, WWF Superstars and Qbert.

The Internet Archive is a non-profit company that was founded to build an Internet library of texts, audio, video, software and archived websites. The site survives because of donations and if you find yourself spending a lot of time playing these games why not show your appreciation with a small donation.
