Yesterday my girlfriend asked me to do something I haven’t done since I was a child. Write a Christmas list.

The process got me thinking about what I wanted for Christmas, as well as birthday because that happens to be the same day. I found myself jotting a few things down and then feeling bad about what I’d listed.

  • iPod Touch
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)
  • Uncharted 2 (PS3)
  • Star Trek (BluRay)
  • The Rise and Fall of WCW (DVD)
  • Jimmy Carr: Telling Jokes (DVD)
  • Tickets to see Dave Gorman at P*mpey Guildhall.
  • A new coat

Not a long list I think you’ll agree. And one that’s heavy with tech stuff. It kind of made me feel bad that this is the stuff I wanted. I felt like I should be asking for things that were better for me than games and films.

Is it strange that I want to want other things?

It reminded me that I want to be a person that gets out there and does things; not a person who sits at home and watches other people do them instead. I want to be a person who looks cool at all times; not someone who can’t be bothered getting his hair cut at regular intervals. I want to be someone who eats good food and exercises; not someone who eats too much chocolate, drinks too much coke and has never seen the inside of a gym.

My inherent laziness is in a constant state of battle with my aspirations.

And that, my friends, is possibly why I don’t make Christmas lists. I’ve been dodging the war by ignoring it, allowing my laziness to prosper. Maybe this year, because my Christmas list has shoved it in my face, it’s time to take a little action…

Seeing as I’ve made a list this year, why not be generous and get me something from it? (http://www.amazon.co.uk/wishlist/1PWAVE148G12Y) Yea, it’s a long shot, but can you blame me for trying? 😉

  1. Very good blog post Al! I felt the same when writing mine the other day, I stopped after 3 things and abandoned it because everything seemed so trivial and there is so much more important stuff that I want/need in my life right now!

Maybe you could write a new year’s resolutions list instead and make a plan for all the things you will do in 2010!
